I don’t normally read Supply Management magazine, but yesterday at breakfast I just happened to flick through an issue, and came across an article on remote working. Remote working / mobile working / tele-working is great for many reasons - choosing your preferred working environment is one of the obvious ones, as Supply Management rightly stated. However, I’m not so sure that the photography team at Supply Management quite hit the nail on the head with their depiction of a mobile working environment;

- This guy is never, ever going to get any kind of wireless signal here. That’s always a real productivity killer for any self-respecting mobile worker.
- Hay bails are dangerous, and this mobile worker is using one as a back support.
- Not only is he sitting on sharp, short, freshly-cut hay, he has to walk through sharp, short, and freshly-cut hay while wearing open toe sandals.
- This mobile worker is so relaxed in his working environment that he might just fall asleep on the the job. Forget the hay/sandal combination - when was the last time a tractor changed its’ course for you?

I agree with points 2, 3 and 4, however, point 1 is definitely changing.
I did a whole bunch of flickr / blog posts about Mog007 (the national Morgan car rally at Goodwood in August) from beside the track… using the T-Mobile wireless signal. The track is in round terms “in the middle of nowhere”.
OK, compared to what I’d have done in the office, I had to downsize the photos to get them up to Flickr… but overall the experience was surprisingly usable.
I would, however, add “5 - battery life” to your list of reasons why the photo isn’t entirely appropriate.

Thanks Mark. I’m a little jaded when it comes to rural Internet connectivity (be it wired or wireless). This has no doubt been aggravated by a recent relocation from a University house with a 20mb connection, to a house in Stratford-Upon-Avon with a 1mb connection!
You sure do know a lot about the country side!
